This ‘Mega’ international project, awarded by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy, marks WABAG’s entry into Kuwait. The contract includes Design, Build, Operate (DBO) for the 60 MIGD plant, with a 36-month EPC phase and a subsequent five-year operation and maintenance period, reinforcing WABAG’s leadership in the GCC desalination sector.

VA TECH WABAG (‘WABAG’), a leading multinational water technology group, has successfully secured a significant Design, Build, Operate (‘DBO’) contract for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System – Stage II in Kuwait. The award comes from the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (‘MEWRE’) of Kuwait. This prestigious order signifies WABAG’s maiden entry into Kuwait and further solidifies its expanding presence and leadership across the GCC region.
Project Details andJV Partnership
The project will be executed through an unincorporated Joint Venture (‘JV’), with WABAG leading the consortium alongside Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C. (‘HEISCO’) as the JV partner. The scope encompasses the design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a 60 MIGD (approximately 272 MLD) Seawater Reverse Osmosis (‘SWRO’) Desalination Plant. A state-of-the-art Recarbonation System will be a key feature of the facility.
Extended Operations and Sustainability Focus
The project is slated for completion over a period of 36 months. In addition to the construction phase, the contract includes a substantial five-year Operation & Maintenance period, ensuring long-term reliability and operational excellence. The facility will utilize advanced desalination technologies to produce high-quality potable water, addressing Kuwait’s growing water demand and enhancing its water security. Notably, the project integrates Solar Photovoltaic (‘PV’) systems to partially meet its energy needs, aligning with Kuwait’s renewable energy goals and contributing to a lower carbon footprint.
Strengthening GCC Footprint
This landmark order significantly strengthens WABAG’s position in the desalination sector and deepens its foothold within the GCC region. It underscores WABAG’s capability to deliver large-scale, technologically advanced desalination solutions aimed at promoting sustainable water management and bolstering long-term water security. Mr. Rohan Mittal, Head – Strategy and Business Growth – GCC, highlighted the project’s strategic importance, stating, “The Doha SWRO II Project marks a significant milestone in WABAG’s growth journey in the GCC region and our maiden entry into Kuwait, a strategically important market.”
