Tata Elxsi: Partners Sarla Aviation on India’s First eVTOL Aircraft

Tata Elxsi and Sarla Aviation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of ‘Shunya’, India’s first indigenous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This partnership combines Sarla Aviation’s vision for urban air mobility with Tata Elxsi’s aerospace engineering and digital engineering expertise. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development, testing, and certification of the Shunya aircraft, targeting a first flight within 18-24 months.

Strategic Partnership for Advanced Air Mobility

Tata Elxsi, a global leader in design and technology services, and Sarla Aviation, an advanced air mobility company, have entered into a significant collaboration. They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop ‘Shunya’, which is set to be India’s first indigenous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This initiative marks a crucial step towards the advancement of urban air mobility in India.

Leveraging Expertise for eVTOL Development

The partnership strategically merges Sarla Aviation’s pioneering vision for urban air mobility with Tata Elxsi’s extensive expertise in aerospace engineering, software development, and flight-critical digital engineering. Tata Elxsi will provide engineering support encompassing avionics, flight control systems, software integration, testing, verification, validation, and certification. Sarla Aviation will lead the overall design, development, and type certification of the Shunya platform. The collaboration also extends to support for sensor fusion based navigation software, industrial and structural design, and airworthiness testing.

Shunya Aircraft: Vision and Capabilities

The Shunya aircraft is designed for flight operations with a range of over 300 Km. It features a combination of vertical take-off and landing capability with the efficiency of fixed-wing cruise, enabling operations independent of runways and enhancing propulsion efficiency. The aircraft is envisioned to connect cities and regions, offering faster and more efficient travel.

Timeline and Future Outlook

The first flight of the Shunya aircraft is targeted within the next 18 to 24 months, with certification activities expected to follow. This development underscores the growing role of Indian aerospace companies in pioneering next-generation aircraft and advanced air mobility solutions. The partnership is also expected to foster capabilities applicable to logistics, air ambulance services, and defense-related applications.
