Adani Green Energy Commissions World’s Largest Single-Location Battery Storage System

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has commissioned the world’s largest single-location Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 3.37 GWh at Khavda, Gujarat. This groundbreaking project, completed in a record 10 months, is set to enhance grid reliability and provide round-the-clock clean power access. AGEL plans to significantly expand its storage capacity, targeting over 10 GWh in FY27 and 50 GWh in the next five years.

Adani Green Energy Commissions Landmark Battery Storage System

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), India’s leading renewable energy company, has announced the commissioning of the world’s largest single-location Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) in Khavda, Gujarat. This significant achievement, reported on May 26, 2026, positions AGEL at the forefront of energy storage solutions globally, outside of China.

Record-Breaking Deployment

The Khavda BESS project is notable not only for its scale but also for its rapid execution. The deployment was completed within an impressive 10 months from the commencement of on-site construction, marking it as one of the fastest utility-scale battery storage projects ever undertaken worldwide. This includes 1.37 GWh of capacity that was commissioned in March 2026, bringing AGEL’s total operational BESS capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh.

Strengthening Grid Reliability and Clean Power Access

The commissioning of this large-scale BESS is a pivotal step towards enhancing grid reliability and ensuring a stable supply of peak-hour electricity. It enables renewable energy sources to deliver dependable, round-the-clock power, a critical factor in India’s clean energy transition. The 3.37 GWh BESS has the capacity to power nearly one million homes for a full day, supporting the electricity demands of major cities or entire states.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, AGEL has ambitious plans for further expanding its energy storage capabilities. The company aims to add over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27 and scale this to a total of 50 GWh over the next five years. This expansion is crucial for integrating a higher proportion of renewable energy into the national grid and supporting sustainable growth.

Strategic Importance and Innovation

Mr. Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL, highlighted the strategic importance of energy storage, stating, “Large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in the next phase of India’s clean energy transition.” He emphasized that as renewable energy capacity grows, storage infrastructure becomes essential for delivering reliable, clean power. The Khavda BESS project utilizes advanced energy management systems and lithium-ion battery technologies to optimize efficiency and grid responsiveness.
