The contract, awarded by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy, involves the design, build, and operation of the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant with a Recarbonation System. Major Project Win in Kuwait

VA TECH WABAG (WABAG), a leading global water technology group, has announced the successful bid for a significant project in Kuwait. This marks WABAG’s maiden entry into the Kuwaiti market and further strengthens its presence across the GCC region. The contract is for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System – Stage II.

Contract Details and Scope

The project has been awarded by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (MEWRE), Kuwait. WABAG will execute this through an unincorporated Joint Venture (JV) where WABAG is the lead partner, in association with Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C. (HEISCO) as the JV partner. The scope encompasses the design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a 60 MIGD (approximately 272 MLD) Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant, which will feature a state-of-the-art Recarbonation System. This is classified as a ‘Mega’ International Order.

Project Timeline and Sustainability Focus

The EPC phase of the project is slated for completion within 36 months. Following commissioning, WABAG will also undertake a five-year Operation & Maintenance period, ensuring long-term reliability. The facility will employ advanced desalination technologies to produce high-quality potable water, addressing Kuwait’s increasing water demand. Notably, the project integrates Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems to partially meet energy requirements, aligning with Kuwait’s renewable energy goals and promoting a lower carbon footprint.

This landmark order reinforces WABAG’s leadership in the desalination sector and its strong foothold in the GCC. The company is capable of delivering large-scale, technologically advanced desalination solutions that contribute to sustainable water management and enhance long-term water security.
