JSW Steel Strategic MoU Signed for Large-Scale Green Methanol Project

JSW Steel has partnered with Bharatia and Carbon Iceland International to develop a 300 KTPA green methanol project in India. Signed on May 25, 2026, during the 3rd India–Nordic Summit, the initiative utilizes carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology to convert CO₂ emissions from steel manufacturing into sustainable eMethanol. This project supports industrial decarbonization goals and highlights the strengthening climate cooperation between India and the Nordic region.

Advancing Industrial Decarbonisation

In a move to foster next-generation green fuel infrastructure, JSW Steel has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharatia and Carbon Iceland International. This collaboration aims to transform industrial waste into value, specifically targeting the conversion of CO₂ emissions generated at JSW Steel’s Raigad, Maharashtra facility into green methanol (eMethanol) using green hydrogen.

Project Scope and Objectives

The proposed project is designed with an initial capacity of 300 KTPA. By integrating carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) pathways, the initiative seeks to create a scalable and replicable model for reducing the carbon footprint of heavy industry. The project will progress through a phased approach, starting with feasibility assessments and technical validation before moving toward commercial-scale implementation.

Collaborative Strengths

The success of this initiative relies on the distinct expertise of the three partners:

  • JSW Steel: Leverages its extensive industrial infrastructure and status as a leading steel manufacturer to host the carbon capture operations.
  • Bharatia: A non-profit foundation providing project architecture, ecosystem integration, and development of financing pathways.
  • Carbon Iceland International: Serves as the primary technology developer, providing expertise in carbon capture integration and e-fuel production.

Commitment to Sustainability

This partnership aligns with JSW Steel’s broader environmental roadmap, which includes a target to reduce CO₂ emissions by 42% by 2030 from its steel-making operations, with a long-term goal of achieving net-neutral carbon emissions by 2050. The initiative reinforces India’s growing role as a hub for climate technology and sustainable industrial growth in the Global South.
