Vedanta Limited has announced the doubling of its annual zinc production capacity to 500,000 tonnes at its South Africa zinc operations. This expansion, an investment of approximately US$ 600 million at Gamsberg (Phase II), aims to bolster the company’s position as the world’s largest zinc producer with a vision of 3 million tonnes annual production across India and South Africa. The initiative, inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, is part of a larger US$ 1.5 billion investment commitment.
Vedanta Boosts South African Zinc Production
Vedanta Limited, a global leader in metals and mining, has officially doubled its annual zinc production capacity at its South African operations. The expansion, located at Gamsberg (Phase II) under Vedanta Zinc International (VZI), will increase capacity to 500,000 tonnes per annum. This significant move represents an investment of approximately US$ 600 million.
Strategic Global Ambition
This expansion is a crucial step towards Vedanta’s vision of achieving 3 million tonnes of annual zinc production across its global operations in India and South Africa. The company aims for 2 million tonnes from its subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc Limited, and 1 million tonnes from Vedanta Zinc International. The Gamsberg expansion is noted as one of the largest mining investments in South Africa this decade.
Presidential Inauguration and Investment Commitment
The inauguration of the expanded capacity was led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Limited Director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar. This project is part of Vedanta’s broader commitment of ZAR 21 billion (nearly US$ 1.5 billion) made at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference, underscoring a strong economic partnership between India and South Africa. President Ramaphosa expressed the government’s commitment to support Vedanta’s expansion initiatives.
Zinc Market Importance
The announcement highlights the growing global demand for zinc, essential for industrial and infrastructure development, particularly in galvanizing steel to prevent corrosion. Vedanta’s enhanced capacity positions it strongly to meet this demand and reinforce its standing in the global zinc market.
Community and ESG Focus
Beyond production, Vedanta has invested approximately US$ 20 million in community initiatives in South Africa since 2011, focusing on health, education, and livelihoods for over 32,000 people annually. The company also recently opened an oncology centre in Namakwa. Vedanta emphasizes sustainability, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
