VA TECH WABAG LIMITED (‘WABAG’), a prominent player in the multinational water technology sector, has been awarded a substantial ‘Large’ order by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). This significant contract is for the development of two crucial energy-efficient wastewater treatment facilities in Bengaluru. The announcement was made on July 20, 2026.
Project Details and Scope
The order encompasses the Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) of a 100 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and a 25 MLD Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP) to be located at Byramangala. Additionally, WABAG will construct a 60 MLD STP at Bellandur. The scope includes comprehensive Design, Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPC) for these facilities, which will also feature biogas-based power generation. The STPs will implement the Activated Sludge Process with a Biological Nutrient Removal system, while the TTP will utilize Ultrafiltration to produce high-quality treated water suitable for distribution.
Strategic Significance and Timeline
This project is set to significantly strengthen Bengaluru’s wastewater treatment capabilities and water infrastructure, addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. WABAG has previously executed the first phase of the Bellandur facility and will now undertake the second phase. The EPC scope is slated for completion within 36 months, followed by a 7-year Operations and Maintenance (O&M) period. The facilities are designed to incorporate anaerobic sludge digestion for biogas-based power generation, aiming to reduce GHG emissions, lower energy footprint, and enhance operational efficiency and resource recovery.
