UltraTech Cement: Scales EV Truck Fleet to 600+ by December 2026

UltraTech Cement Limited is set to expand its logistics operations by scaling its electric vehicle (EV) truck fleet to over 600 units by December 2026. This strategic move aims to decarbonize its supply chain, with an anticipated annual CO2 reduction of over 1,17,000 tonnes. The company has secured service contracts with major EV manufacturers to achieve this transition, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and Net Zero goals.

UltraTech Cement to Expand Electric Truck Fleet

UltraTech Cement Limited, a prominent Aditya Birla Group company, has announced its plan to significantly scale up its electric vehicle (EV) fleet in its logistics operations. The company aims to have more than 600 EV trucks deployed by December 2026. This initiative is a key part of UltraTech’s broader strategy to enhance sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint across its value chain.

Sustainability and Operational Impact

The deployment of this large electric fleet is expected to result in an annual reduction of over 1,17,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, displacing approximately 39 million litres of diesel per year. The 600+ EV trucks will be instrumental in transporting an estimated five million metric tonnes of clinker and other essential materials annually across several Indian states, including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Odisha.

Strategic Partnerships and Commitment to Net Zero

To facilitate this transition, UltraTech Cement has entered into service contracts with leading EV prime mover manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, IPLTech, Energy in Motion, and Sany, along with their subsidiaries and third-party logistics providers. Mr. K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Limited, stated that this large-scale shift to green logistics reinforces the company’s dedication to decarbonizing its entire value chain and achieving its Net Zero targets.

Pioneering Green Logistics in the Cement Sector

UltraTech Cement has established itself as a pioneer in sustainable transportation within the cement industry. It was the first cement company to deploy heavy-duty electric trucks for long-haul transport at scale. Building on its early adoption of green logistics, including the introduction of CNG trucks in 2021, the company currently operates over 850 trucks as part of its green logistics initiatives. The company’s electrification strategy encompasses its entire supply chain, from mine-to-plant movement to inter-plant transport.
