Tata Steel Company Challenges ₹1,755 Crore Mining Demand Notice

Tata Steel Limited has formally contested a ₹1,755,10,54,029 demand notice issued by the District Mining Office in Ramgarh, Jharkhand. The demand alleges excess coal extraction of approximately 16.24 million tonnes from the West Bokaro Colliery between FY 2000-01 and FY 2006-07. The company maintains that the claim lacks both justification and substantive basis, and has filed a revision application with the Union Ministry of Coal to challenge the order.

Dispute Over Mining Claims

On April 24, 2026, Tata Steel Limited officially filed a revision application, numbered 101 of 2026, with the Revisional Authority at the Ministry of Coal. This legal action serves as a formal challenge to a demand notice received on April 3, 2026, from the District Mining Office (DMO) in Ramgarh, Jharkhand. The DMO had demanded an aggregate payment of ₹1,755,10,54,029 based on allegations of unauthorized excess extraction of minerals.

Basis of the Demand

The administrative demand centers on the extraction of nearly 16,240,399 MT of coal from the company’s West Bokaro Colliery. The DMO asserts that this production exceeded the permissible limits established during the period spanning FY 2000-01 to FY 2006-07. The demand mirrors concerns raised in previous landmark legal cases regarding mineral extraction limits in the region.

Management Stance

Tata Steel’s management has reviewed the notice and explicitly stated that the demand is lacking in justification and substantive merit. By seeking intervention from the Ministry of Coal, the company is attempting to resolve the dispute and protect its operational standing. The outcome of this revision application will determine the company’s final financial liability regarding these legacy mining claims.
