Praj Industries: Partners With Gevo for Bio-IBA Technology in India

Praj Industries has signed a Development & Commercialization Agreement with Gevo Inc. for Bio-Isobutanol (Bio-IBA) technology in India. This partnership aims to commercialize Bio-IBA for diesel blending applications, targeting a significant reduction in carbon intensity for transportation and industrial fuels. Praj will lead the commercialization efforts in India, leveraging its expertise and Gevo’s technology.

Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Fuels

Praj Industries and Gevo Inc. have announced the signing of a Development & Commercialization Agreement to introduce Bio-Isobutanol (Bio-IBA) technology in India. This collaboration marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable low-carbon fuel solutions, with a primary focus on diesel blending applications. The agreement, signed on September 16, 2026, positions Praj to lead the commercialization of this technology within India, holding exclusive deployment rights.

Leveraging Expertise for Indian Market

The partnership builds upon a decade-long association between the two companies. It aims to adapt and advance Bio-IBA technology for India’s specific feedstocks and market demands. Praj’s deep understanding of Indian agricultural feedstocks and its engineering and market development expertise will be combined with Gevo’s proprietary Bio-IBA technology. This synergy is expected to support the scale-up and widespread adoption of Bio-IBA in the Indian market.

Demonstration Plant and Market Opportunity

In a related development, Praj is currently establishing India’s first commercial Bio-IBA demonstration plant for a leading Oil Marketing Company. This project, based on Gevo’s licensed technology, will be crucial in validating production, supply chain, and market development pathways for future commercialization. The initiative is particularly timely given India’s large diesel economy and abundant renewable feedstock resources, presenting a substantial opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of fuels used in transportation, agriculture, mining, and industrial sectors.

Broader Applications and Future Outlook

Beyond diesel applications, Bio-IBA also serves as a versatile platform molecule for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other renewable chemicals. This highlights its strategic importance within the growing bioeconomy. According to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC), India consumed approximately 94.7 million tonnes of high-speed diesel in FY2025-26, underscoring the vast market potential for such low-carbon fuel solutions to support India’s energy security and decarbonization goals.
