POWERGRID has announced an investment approval for a significant project aimed at reconductoring power transmission lines. The project, named “Reconductoring of Tirunelveli – Udumalpet and Pugalur – Madurai 400kV D/c lines with HTLS conductor,” has an estimated cost of ₹856.94 Crore. This capital expenditure is expected to enhance transmission capacity and reliability, with commissioning targeted within 24 months by February 2028.
Investment Approval for Transmission Line Upgrade
POWERGRID, through its ‘Committee of Directors on Investment on Projects’, has granted investment approval for a critical new project. The approval was accorded in a meeting held on Wednesday, 05th August, 2026.

The approved project is titled “Reconductoring of Tirunelveli – Udumalpet and Pugalur – Madurai 400kV D/c lines with HTLS conductor“. This initiative is classified under ‘Additional Capital Expenditure’ and carries an estimated cost of ₹856.94 Crore. The project aims to upgrade and reinforce the existing transmission infrastructure.
Commissioning Timeline
The reconductoring project is scheduled to be commissioned within a period of 24 months from the date of project allocation. Consequently, the targeted completion date for this significant undertaking is by 11.02.2028, enhancing the capacity and efficiency of key power transmission corridors.
