Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced the discovery of natural gas in the shallow offshore block KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 in the Krishna-Godavari Basin. The discovery was made in the ‘Matsyapuri’ formation, with hydrocarbon presence reported between depths of 2024 to 2027 meters. Production testing commenced on October 16, 2026, yielding a flow rate of approximately 1 Lakh SCUMD, with a peak of 2 Lakh SCUMD.
Natural Gas Discovery in Krishna-Godavari Basin
Oil India Limited (OIL), a Maharatna CPSE, has reported a significant stride in its hydrocarbon exploration efforts with the discovery of natural gas in the Krishna-Godavari Basin. This discovery occurred in the KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 block, located in the shallow offshore waters of the basin. The company operates this block as the Sole Operator.
Discovery Details and Production Testing
The natural gas was found in the ‘Matsyapuri’ formation. During appraisal drilling of the Well Godavari – 1, hydrocarbon presence was confirmed in selected pay zones at depths ranging from 2024 to 2027 meters. Production testing initiated on October 16, 2026, revealed a flow rate of approximately 1 Lakh Standard Cubic Meters per Day (SCUMD) of natural gas. The testing also achieved a maximum flow rate of 2 Lakh SCUMD.
Furthermore, the production test yielded approximately 170 barrels of oil per day (bopd) of condensate, with an API gravity of 55.8 at 60°F. Water was also present, and the wellhead pressure recorded was 1815 psi. Preparations are currently underway to test the next higher zone.
