Larsen & Toubro L&T Energy GreenTech Partners with Japan’s ITOCHU for Green Ammonia Supply

L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEGL), a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, has signed a landmark long-term partnership with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation. Under this agreement, LTEGL will supply 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually from its planned production facility in Kandla, Gujarat. This move accelerates India’s position as a global green energy exporter and supports the maritime industry’s transition to low-carbon fuels.

Securing Long-Term Green Energy Demand

L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEGL) has solidified a strategic collaboration with ITOCHU Corporation, marking a transition from previous joint development efforts to active, long-term supply. The agreement, signed at ITOCHU’s headquarters in Tokyo on April 22, 2026, involves a captive long-term take-or-pay basis contract for 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia every year.

Strategic Significance for Global Shipping

The green ammonia produced at the upcoming Kandla facility will be utilized by ITOCHU to expand its global green bunkering operations. By focusing on key maritime trade routes, specifically targeting hubs like Singapore, the partnership aims to facilitate the early adoption of ammonia as a viable, next-generation marine fuel. This project is a major step toward global decarbonization in the shipping sector.

Advancing India’s Green Hydrogen Mission

This partnership aligns directly with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, positioning the nation as a premier exporter of green energy derivatives. For L&T, this contract serves as a critical milestone in translating its clean energy ambitions into large-scale, bankable infrastructure. By establishing a reliable and scalable supply chain, LTEGL is reinforcing its capability to provide sustainable energy solutions across the entire green hydrogen value chain.
