IndiGo Temporarily Discontinues Flights to Manchester Due to Cost and Operational Environment

IndiGo has announced the temporary discontinuation of its flights to and from Manchester, effective August 31, 2026. This decision stems from an unfavorable cost and operational environment, including increased flight durations due to airspace constraints and rising aviation turbine fuel costs. The airline will return one of its leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to Norse Atlantic Airways. IndiGo reaffirms its commitment to its long-haul ambitions and aims to resume services when conditions are viable.

IndiGo Pauses Manchester Operations

IndiGo has announced a temporary halt to its flight operations connecting India and Manchester. This discontinuation will be effective from August 31, 2026. The decision comes amidst a challenging international airspace environment leading to significantly increased flight durations and a difficult cost landscape for the airline.

Reasons for Discontinuation

The airline cited prevailing industry-wide challenges, including geopolitical developments in the Middle East, escalating aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, severe airspace constraints, and foreign exchange volatility, as key factors impacting operating costs. These factors have made operating costs considerably higher than initially anticipated.

Fleet and Partnership Adjustments

As a consequence of this operational adjustment, IndiGo plans to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft that were on a damp/wet lease from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially inducted in early 2025 as part of a strategy to establish the IndiGo brand in the European market ahead of its own Airbus A350 services.

Customer and Stakeholder Communication

IndiGo will proactively notify affected customers and provide assistance with alternative travel arrangements or refunds. The company expressed gratitude to its customers, trade partners, and Manchester Airport for their support and reiterated that this discontinuation is temporary. IndiGo remains optimistic about its long-haul ambitions and is actively exploring innovative solutions for future collaborations with Norse Atlantic Airways.
