Hindustan Zinc has increased its renewable power consumption to 22% of its total energy needs, up from approximately 18% in FY26. The company is targeting 70% renewable power by FY28, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy and sustainability. This expansion includes a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable power arrangement and supports its Net Zero 2050 ambition.

Hindustan Zinc Boosts Renewable Energy Use

Hindustan Zinc Limited has announced a significant milestone in its clean energy transition, increasing its renewable power consumption to 22% of its overall power requirements. This marks a substantial increase from approximately 18% reported in FY26. The company is strategically progressing towards meeting a remarkable 70% of its total power needs through renewable energy sources by the financial year 2028 (FY28).

Key Initiatives and Capacity Expansion

To support this ambitious target, Hindustan Zinc has expanded its round-the-clock renewable energy power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW. This strategic move is complemented by ongoing efforts to upgrade power connectivity to the central transmission utility and implement innovative in-house projects focused on efficiency and sustainability. Key initiatives include enhancing waste heat recovery boiler steam turbine generation and harnessing renewable energy through floating solar installations on water ponds.

Sustainability Roadmap and Net Zero Ambition

The company’s renewable energy portfolio diversifies across solar, wind, and energy storage solutions, aiming to ensure a reliable supply of clean power across all its operations. This commitment is an integral part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader sustainability roadmap and its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated decarbonisation pathway. These efforts are geared towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable mining and metals production.

Recognition and Future Outlook

Hindustan Zinc has been recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining category for the third consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. The company also launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon ‘green’ zinc brand, produced using renewable energy. As Hindustan Zinc advances towards a multi-metal future, clean energy remains central to its strategy of producing essential metals sustainably and responsibly for India’s growth and the global energy transition.
