Hindustan Zinc Chanderiya Smelter Becomes India’s First Zinc Mark Site

Hindustan Zinc’s Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS) has achieved a landmark milestone by becoming the first site in India to receive Zinc Mark validation. This recognition under the Copper Mark Assurance Process acknowledges the company’s commitment to rigorous environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. By meeting these international benchmarks, the site confirms its leadership in responsible metal production and sustainable operations within the global manufacturing ecosystem.

Setting a New Benchmark for Sustainability

On April 29, 2026, Hindustan Zinc announced that its Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS) officially achieved the prestigious Zinc Mark validation. This milestone makes it the first site in India to be assessed and verified under the Copper Mark Assurance Process, an internationally recognized framework that evaluates site-level performance against stringent ESG criteria.

Validation of ESG Excellence

The Zinc Mark assessment involved a comprehensive review of the smelter’s operating practices. The validation confirms that the facility adheres to global standards in key areas, including:

  • Emissions and Energy Efficiency
  • Water and Waste Management
  • Biodiversity Protection
  • Worker Safety and Human Rights
  • Ethical Business Practices

According to Mr. Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, this achievement is a direct reflection of the company’s forward-looking strategy. It reinforces their commitment to transparency, accountability, and the production of sustainably sourced metals essential for the global energy transition.

Global Recognition and Industry Leadership

This achievement builds upon Hindustan Zinc’s recent accolades, including being named the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for three consecutive years in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. As the first Indian mining company to join the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM), Hindustan Zinc continues to set high standards for the industry. Through initiatives like EcoZen—the company’s low-carbon ‘green’ zinc brand—and a firm commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, the organization is actively positioning India as a global hub for responsibly produced critical minerals.
