Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a contract with SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. for the design, development, manufacture, and lifecycle support of a new-generation high-power helicopter engine named “Aravalli.” This engine, in the 3,500 to 4,000 shp class, is intended for HAL’s upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant. The agreement marks a key milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in critical aerospace propulsion technologies.
HAL Signs Landmark Engine Contract
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) announced on August 26, 2026, that it has entered into a significant contract with SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL). This agreement focuses on the design, development, manufacture, supply, and lifecycle support of a new-generation, high-power helicopter engine, designated as “Aravalli.” The engine is designed to operate in the 3,500 to 4,000 shp power class.
Aravalli Engine for Future Helicopters
The “Aravalli” engine has been selected to power HAL’s forthcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). This strategic move underscores HAL’s commitment to advancing indigenous capabilities in critical aerospace propulsion systems. The contract represents a major milestone in achieving greater self-reliance within India’s aerospace and defence sector.
Strengthening Collaboration
The contract was formally signed by Mr. Ajay Kumar Shrivastava, Director of Engineering, Research & Development at HAL, and Mr. Olivier Savin, Director of SAFHAL Helicopter Engines and Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing at Safran Helicopter Engines. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Ravi K, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, and Mr. Cédric Goubet, Chief Executive Officer of Safran Helicopter Engines. This collaboration aims to build a strong foundation for future Indian helicopter platforms by developing world-class propulsion systems.
Indigenous Development and Future Prospects
Mr. Ravi K highlighted that the contract is a significant step forward in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in aero-engine technologies. The “Aravalli” engine programme is expected not only to meet the operational needs of the IMRH and DBMRH but also to contribute substantially to the growth of a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem. Mr. Cédric Goubet of Safran Helicopter Engines expressed delight in deepening the partnership with HAL, emphasizing shared commitments to innovation and industrial excellence.
