Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has announced a substantial capacity expansion initiative, investing a total of ₹2670 crore. This strategic move is designed to bolster its indigenous shipbuilding and defence manufacturing capabilities, positioning the company for enhanced growth and the execution of more complex projects.
Key Expansion Projects and Investments
The expansion will see the development of three new facilities: Raichak, Timber Pond facility – Shalimar, and Damodar facility – Khidderpore Docks. The capital expenditure for these projects is allocated as follows: ₹2500 crore for the Raichak facility, ₹100 crore for the Timber Pond facility, and ₹70 crore for the Damodar facility. These investments underscore GRSE’s commitment to strengthening its infrastructure and operational capacity.
Strategic Objectives of Expansion
These expansion initiatives aim to significantly enhance GRSE’s ability to undertake larger and more intricate projects, thereby supporting future growth. The focus is on reinforcing the company’s position in the shipbuilding and defence manufacturing sectors. The announcement was made in a press release dated August 24, 2026.
Details of New Facilities
The Raichak facility, a major component of this expansion, will be developed as a shipbuilding hub with an investment of over ₹2,500 crore. It will feature a 200-metre dry dock, slipway, launching pad, jetties, and block fabrication facilities, enabling the construction of warships up to 200 metres and commercial vessels up to 60,000 DWT. The Timber Pond facility at Shalimar will undergo rejuvenation for medium-sized shipbuilding and repairs, including restoration of a 130-metre dry dock and construction of a 120-metre slipway, with an investment of approximately ₹100 crore. The Damodar facility at Kidderpore Docks will be upgraded for medium-sized vessel repairs and the construction of electric ferries and other small crafts, with an investment of around ₹70 crore.
Alignment with National Initiatives
These expansion projects are also highlighted as a significant step towards advancing the Government of India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ vision. The ceremonies for these projects were conducted simultaneously at Kidderpore, Shalimar, Raichak, and Ishapore across West Bengal.
YIL Collaboration and Investment
In parallel, Yantra India Limited (YIL) is investing over ₹750 crore in two facilities at its Metal and Steel Factory (MSF) in Ishapore. This includes a 3,000-ton Heavy Duty Hydraulic Open Die Forging Press (₹277.59 crore) and a Radial Forging Plant (₹473.84 crore) to enhance indigenous metallurgical and defence manufacturing capabilities, including super alloy forgings and defence components.
Broader Economic Impact
These collective projects are expected to strengthen the capabilities of GRSE and YIL, simultaneously supporting the revival of West Bengal’s industrial ecosystem through job creation and increased opportunities for ancillary industries, particularly MSMEs. The Hon’ble Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, expressed confidence in these developments, emphasizing their role in national security and self-reliance.
