eMudhra Limited announced its decision to voluntarily withdraw from the global SSL/TLS certificate business. The move, approved by its Board, aims to sharpen the company’s focus on its core enterprise solutions and trust services beyond SSL/TLS. This strategic shift comes after a recent incident that amplified scrutiny on this segment, which contributes only about 1% of eMudhra’s global revenue.
Strategic Exit from SSL/TLS Business
eMudhra Limited has declared its intention to voluntarily exit the global SSL/TLS certificate business. The decision, confirmed by the company’s Board of Directors on October 22, 2026, signifies a strategic pivot to concentrate on its more robust enterprise solutions and other trust services.
Rationale Behind the Decision
Mr. V. Srinivasan, Chairman of eMudhra, highlighted that the global SSL/TLS segment represents a small fraction, approximately 1%, of the company’s overall revenue. He cited increasing complexities, compliance requirements, and costs associated with this business. Furthermore, the fact that some large entities offer SSL/TLS certificates free of charge has diminished its business potential and Return on Investment (ROI) for eMudhra.
The recent incident involving a global SSL/TLS certificate, despite being handled diligently with prompt revocation and no end-entity certificates issued from affected CAs, brought disproportionate social media attention. After extensive deliberations, the Board concluded that withdrawing from this segment is the most appropriate decision for eMudhra and its shareholders. The company aims to redirect its energy towards areas where it can create greater value, focusing on its Core Enterprise Solutions and trust services other than SSL/TLS.
Seamless Customer Transition and Core Business Continuity
eMudhra assures its customers of a seamless transition. The company will continue to support existing SSL/TLS certificate holders until their expiration or replacement. Revocation and certificate status services will remain operational. eMudhra will also fulfill its commitments to browser root programs, including providing a comprehensive root-cause report.
Crucially, the company’s core businesses, including its Global Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), eSign, enterprise PKI Solutions (emCA, CertiNext), emSigner eSignature Suite, and identity and authentication solutions (SecurePass, emAS), remain unaffected by this decision. These operations continue to function normally.
