Supplies to the power sector grew 4.5% to 48.46 MT, while the non-regulated sector saw a 9.6% rise to 12.12 MT. Year-to-date supplies are up 6.70% to 322.90 MT, and CIL has sufficient pithead coal inventory.
Coal India Reports Strong August Supply Growth
Kolkata, September 1, 2026 – Coal India Limited (CIL) announced today that its total coal supplies for August FY’27 increased by 5.50% year-over-year, reaching 60.60 million tonnes (MT). This marks a substantial growth compared to the 57.40 MT supplied during the same month in the previous fiscal year.
Sectoral Performance Highlights
The company’s performance in August FY’27 was bolstered by significant contributions across key sectors. Coal supplies to the power sector registered a growth of 4.5%, with deliveries totaling 48.46 MT, up from 46.39 MT in August FY’25-26. Additionally, the non-regulated sector (NRS) experienced robust growth, with supplies increasing by 9.6% to 12.12 MT, compared to 11.06 MT in the prior year’s corresponding month.
Year-to-Date Momentum and Inventory Levels
Looking at the broader financial year, CIL’s total coal supplies during the first five months of FY’27 (up to August) reached 322.90 MT. This represents a healthy growth of 6.70% over the 302.60 MT supplied during the same period last year. The company also successfully liquidated approximately 55 MT of pithead coal stocks during these first five months. CIL currently maintains a substantial inventory of around 76 MT of coal at its pitheads, ensuring sufficient supply to meet future power generation demands.
Outlook and Operational Preparedness
As the monsoon season gradually subsides and drier conditions approach, CIL is proactively preparing to ramp up both its coal production and supply chain operations to meet anticipated market demand.
