Coal India Limited (CIL) has achieved a landmark operational performance in October FY 2026-27, recording its highest-ever monthly total coal supplies and supplies to the power sector. The company’s coal production also reached its highest-ever level for the month of October. CIL’s total supplies reached 70.3 million tonnes (MT), a 19% increase from the previous year, while power sector supplies hit 57.1 MT.

Record-Breaking Coal Supplies and Production

Kolkata, November 1, 2026 – Coal India Limited (CIL) announced a historic operational achievement in October FY 2026-27, marking its highest-ever monthly total coal supplies and supplies to the power sector. The company’s coal production also recorded its best-ever performance for the month of October in any financial year.

These achievements are particularly significant given the increased demand for coal at thermal power plants and challenges posed by unseasonal rainfall, festivities, and a cyclone.

Key Figures and Growth

  • CIL’s total coal supplies surpassed 70 million tonnes (MT) for the first time, reaching 70.3 MT. This represents a robust 19% growth compared to 59.2 MT in October FY 2025–26.
  • The previous monthly record of 69.4 MT was set in March 2026.
  • CIL’s subsidiary MCL also achieved a record, crossing 20 MT in monthly supplies.
  • Supplies to the power sector reached an all-time high of 57.1 MT in October FY 2026–27, a 19% increase from 48 MT in October FY 2025–26.

Railway Evacuation Milestone

A significant milestone was also achieved in railway coal evacuation. CIL recorded an average daily power-sector rake loading of 310 rakes per day during October FY 2026-27. This surpasses the previous monthly average record of 302.8 rakes per day, set in March 2025.

Production Surge

Coal production in October FY 2026–27 reached 67.2 MT, setting a new record for the month and exceeding the previous October high of 62.47 MT recorded in October 2024. This represents approximately a 19% increase from the 56.38 MT achieved in October FY 2025–26, indicating a sharp acceleration in mining activity post-monsoon.

Outlook

The simultaneous growth in coal production and offtake suggests an anticipated accretion of coal stocks at both power plant ends and pit heads. CIL’s performance underscores its commitment to supporting India’s energy security and building a strong operational foundation for the remainder of FY 2026-27.
