BHEL Partners with NSTL-DRDO for Advanced Naval Technology Transfer

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered into a significant Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) with the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL-DRDO). This strategic partnership focuses on the indigenous fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the LM2500 Gas Turbine Infrared Suppression System (GT-IRSS) for naval vessels, marking a pivotal step in strengthening BHEL’s defence capabilities and supporting the national ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Strategic Collaboration for Naval Defence

BHEL has officially solidified its commitment to bolstering India’s naval defence sector through a new technology transfer agreement. By collaborating with NSTL-DRDO, a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation, BHEL aims to manufacture and deploy advanced GT-IRSS technology. This system is critical for naval vessels, providing essential infrared suppression capabilities that enhance operational security.

Driving Indigenous Innovation

The scope of this agreement covers the complete lifecycle of the LM2500 GT-IRSS, including local fabrication, installation, and commissioning. By internalizing this specialized technology, BHEL is diversifying its industrial portfolio and reducing reliance on external solutions. This move is fully aligned with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ vision, promoting domestic manufacturing of high-end defence equipment.

Strategic Benefits

This partnership is expected to yield several long-term benefits for the company:

  • Diversification: Enhances BHEL’s footprint in the competitive defence manufacturing landscape.
  • Operational Excellence: Enables the local integration of sophisticated gas turbine systems designed by NSTL-DRDO.
  • Self-Reliance: Contributes directly to the nation’s goal of achieving greater self-sufficiency in critical defence infrastructure for the Indian Navy.
