Ms. Sinha, currently an Independent Director, brings over three decades of experience in financial services and public policy to the role, aiming to drive the bank’s next phase of growth.

Leadership Transition at Airtel Payments Bank

Airtel Payments Bank Limited, a prominent digital bank in India, has announced a significant leadership change. Shabnam Sinha will be taking over the mantle as Chairperson, succeeding the current Non-Executive Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal. This transition is set to take effect from October 1, 2026, following Mr. Mittal’s conclusion of his tenure on September 30, 2026.

Shabnam Sinha Appointed Chairperson

Ms. Sinha’s appointment as Chairperson is for a three-year term and has been approved by the Board of Directors and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). She is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in development finance, financial services, public policy, and institutional transformation, including her advisory roles with the World Bank. Ms. Sinha currently serves as an Independent Director on the Board of Airtel Payments Bank and chairs its Special Committee of the Board for Monitoring Frauds, besides being a member of the Risk Management and IT Committees.

Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Legacy

Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, was instrumental in the establishment of Airtel Payments Bank in April 2016. Under his leadership, the bank grew to become India’s largest payments bank by revenue, serving over 121 million monthly active users and nearly 30 million bank account customers. The bank has built a vast network of over 500,000 banking points, significantly expanding access to formal banking services across India.

Commenting on the transition, Mr. Mittal expressed confidence in Ms. Sinha’s leadership, stating that the Airtel Payments Bank will build upon its strong foundation.
