Interim Relief from Court
AstraZeneca Pharma India Limited has announced an update regarding the notice received from the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) concerning alleged overcharging. The company has secured an interim order from the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi, dated October 29, 2026. This order mandates that no coercive steps are to be taken by the NPPA concerning this matter until the next date of hearing.
NPPA Allegations and Court Hearing
The NPPA had issued a notice to AstraZeneca alleging overcharging under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, for its product, Symbicort Turbuhaler 160/4.5 (Inhaler). This notice was in response to a show-cause notice issued in September 2025, with allegations pertaining to the period from May 2016 to November 2025. The company subsequently challenged this demand before the High Court.
Financial Impact and Next Steps
The Hon’ble High Court’s order provides a temporary reprieve, stating that NPPA cannot take coercive steps until the next hearing, which is scheduled for January 11, 2027. The alleged overcharged amount, including interest up to October 30, 2026, amounts to approximately ₹151,19,66,035. AstraZeneca has been directed to provide details as required under SEBI’s Master Circular.
The company is taking all necessary steps to address this matter and will provide further updates as they become available.
