Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited has announced a significant expansion of its strategic collaboration with DifGen Pharmaceuticals, aimed at bolstering its complex generics portfolio within the United States market. This enhanced partnership builds upon an existing relationship, including a joint venture in Canada.
Synergies and Strategic Focus
The expanded collaboration effectively merges DifGen’s expertise in development and US manufacturing with Alembic’s robust US commercialization capabilities. Under this agreement, DifGen will lead the development, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and supply chain activities for the portfolio. Concurrently, Alembic will undertake the manufacturing of select products and spearhead their commercialization across the US. This strategic alignment is designed to accelerate market penetration and leverage combined strengths.
Key Highlights of the Expanded Collaboration
The collaboration is set to introduce a broad and differentiated portfolio of complex generics, comprising over 20 products. These will span various dosage forms, including injectables, transdermals, ophthalmics, and other complex formulations, addressing a substantial aggregate reference market estimated at approximately US$5 billion.
The partnership also offers higher value opportunities and faster market access, with potential for Day 1 launches and products facing limited competition. Furthermore, the initiative provides near-term revenue visibility with potential for scaling, as initial launches are anticipated from FY28. This platform is expected to contribute progressively to Alembic’s US business over the coming years.
An important aspect of the collaboration is the US manufacturing optionality, which includes reserving capacity at DifGen’s US facilities and developing a framework to progressively build US manufacturing capacity for select dosage forms.
