Google has officially commenced construction on its landmark gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Developed in a strategic partnership with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel, this project is a centerpiece of Google’s $15 billion investment (2026-2030) in India. The infrastructure milestone is designed to support the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, fostering an industrial ecosystem that blends advanced AI capabilities with sustainable energy and local community development.
Advancing India’s Digital Infrastructure
The groundbreaking ceremony held on April 28, 2026, marks the beginning of construction on India’s first gigawatt-scale AI hub. The facility will span three data center campuses, serving as a critical pillar for India’s digital future. This initiative is part of a broader US$15 billion, five-year commitment by Google to establish a comprehensive AI ecosystem that provides high-performance, low-latency services to businesses and developers across the country.
Strategic Partnership for Innovation
This project leverages the complementary strengths of AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel to build world-class data centers and connecting infrastructure. The AI hub is integrated with the America-India Connect initiative, expanding the nation’s fiber-optic network. Furthermore, a clean energy strategy is at the core of the development, aiming to accelerate India’s national goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Community-Centric Development
Beyond technical infrastructure, the AI hub focuses on long-term socio-economic impact through several key programs:
- Securing Water Futures: Implementing watershed management and clean drinking water systems.
- Modernizing Maritime Trades: Equipping over 1,000 fishermen with digital navigation and weather-forecasting tools.
- Empowering Grassroots Innovation: Providing grants for AI-led skilling labs and local entrepreneurship.
- Scaling Women-Led Enterprises: Supporting 10,000+ entrepreneurs via the NARI Shakti program.
- Building a Future-Ready Workforce: Training over 2,200 individuals in cloud computing, generative AI, and vital infrastructure roles through the STAR program and ICT Academy partnerships.
Fostering the AI Industrial Corridor
Concurrent with the construction start, the Bharat AI Shakti Conclave was held to align stakeholders and suppliers. This industrial strategy prioritizes a local-first procurement approach, integrating small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into global operational frameworks to strengthen regional industrial competitiveness and ensure the project drives sustainable, generational growth across Andhra Pradesh.
