Coal India Limited (CIL) reported robust operational performance for July FY’27, with coal production increasing by 8.44% to 50.36 million tonnes (MT). Coal supplies also saw a substantial rise of 18.38%, reaching 64.19 MT, marking the highest-ever coal offtake for July. The company also achieved strong cumulative growth in coal supplies and overburden removal.
Coal India Reports Strong July Performance
Kolkata, August 01, 2026 – Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced a strong operational performance for July in the financial year 2026-27 (FY’27). The company recorded an 8.44% growth in coal production, reaching 50.36 million tonnes (MT). In parallel, coal supplies surged by 18.38% to 64.19 MT compared to the same period last year. This volume represents the highest-ever coal offtake for the month of July in any financial year, surpassing the previous record of 60.5 MT in FY’24-25.
Sustained Momentum in Supplies
The robust operational momentum follows a record performance in June FY’27, where CIL achieved its highest-ever supply for the month. This sustained performance has led to a 6.9% increase in cumulative coal supplies during the first four months of FY’27 (April-July), totaling 262.04 MT. This figure is the highest-ever volume supplied for the corresponding period, exceeding the previous record of 259.4 MT from FY’24-25. Despite challenges such as monsoon rains, CIL has maintained healthy coal production and a strong supply momentum through an optimized inventory strategy.
Sectoral Supply Growth
Supplies to the power sector, CIL’s largest consumer segment, grew by 18% in July FY’27, reaching 49.77 MT from 42.35 MT in the previous year. The non-regulated sector also witnessed healthy growth, with supplies rising by 21% to 14.42 MT from 11.89 MT in the comparable period.
Overburden Removal Enhancements
In addition to production and supply figures, CIL reported a significant improvement in overburden (OB) removal, a critical activity for opencast coal mining. During July FY’27, OB removal increased by 21.11% to 120.35 million cubic meters (MCuM) from 99.36 MCuM in July FY’26. Cumulatively, OB removal from April to July FY’27 stood at 625.02 MCuM, reflecting a 2.85% growth over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal. Timely OB removal is essential for ensuring uninterrupted access to coal seams and maintaining sustained production.
