GMDC Partners with University of Cambridge for India’s First AI Rare Earth Observatory

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has partnered with the University of Cambridge to establish India’s first AI-powered Rare Earth Supply Chain Observatory. This initiative will create an interactive platform tracking the global Rare Earth Elements (REE) value chain in real-time. The collaboration, involving a £600,000 investment over two years, aims to enhance India’s strategic capabilities in critical minerals and strengthen Gujarat’s position in the sector.

Strategic AI Collaboration Launched

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) has entered into a significant strategic collaboration with the University of Cambridge. This partnership is set to establish a dedicated Rare Earth Observatory at GMDC’s International Centre of Excellence in Mining. The Observatory will leverage Artificial Intelligence to deliver a unique, interactive intelligence platform. This platform will provide real-time tracking of the complete Rare Earth Elements (REE) value chain, from mine to magnet, encompassing price movements, processing capacity, supply disruptions, and geopolitical risks across global REE supply chains.

Expertise and Investment

The initiative seamlessly integrates GMDC’s extensive ground-level mining expertise with the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) at Cambridge. Specifically, Cambridge’s Industrial Resilience Group, internationally renowned for its work in critical mineral supply chains, ESG integration, and AI-driven industrial analytics, will be involved. The collaboration is structured as a phased, two-year program with an investment of £600,000. Its outcome will be scalable, operationally deployable intelligence tools designed to position Gujarat and India at the forefront of rare earth supply chain resilience.

Addressing National Priorities

With India’s Rare Earth Processing Materials (REPM) consumption projected to double by 2030, driven by the growth in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and defence sectors, actionable, real-time supply chain intelligence has become a national strategic priority. The Rare Earth Observatory directly addresses this critical gap by providing an essential evidence base for policy calibration, industrial procurement, and strategic stockpiling decisions. Through iCEM, an organization supported by GMDC, full access to Cambridge’s advanced research tools and global network is ensured, integrating world-class analytical capability with on-ground Indian mining operations.

Vision for the Future

This collaboration is anticipated to advance GMDC’s evolution into a knowledge-driven enterprise and strengthen Gujarat’s position as India’s leading hub for critical mineral intelligence. It directly supports the nation’s ambitions for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Management Commentary

Shri Roopwant Singh, IAS, Managing Director of GMDC, commented, “Rare earth elements are not a commodity story; they are a sovereignty story. The Observatory we are building with the University of Cambridge is GMDC’s contribution to solving that challenge at a national level, creating an AI-driven intelligence architecture for the REE value chain that India had never before. By integrating Cambridge’s world-class research capability with iCEM’s operational depth, we are not merely scaling our existing operations; we are building the strategic capabilities that the nation urgently needs.”
