JSW Steel Strategic Joint Venture with POSCO to Build Odisha Steel Plant

JSW Steel has entered into a landmark 50:50 joint venture agreement with the POSCO Group to establish a new 6 MTPA greenfield integrated steel plant in Odisha. This strategic partnership involves a capital infusion of approximately INR 508.8 crore from the POSCO Group into Saffron Resources Private Limited. The venture aims to combine JSW’s operational strength with POSCO’s advanced manufacturing technology for high-grade steel products.

Strategic Collaboration for Steel Expansion

In a major development for the Indian steel industry, JSW Steel and the South Korean steel giant POSCO have announced a partnership to set up a massive 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel facility in Odisha. The deal transforms Saffron Resources Private Limited, a subsidiary of JSW Steel, into a 50:50 joint venture between the two organizations. The proposed plant will leverage 887 acres of land already held by Saffron in the region.

Investment and Operational Details

Under the terms of the agreement, the POSCO Group will subscribe to shares in Saffron for a total consideration of approximately INR 508.8 crore. Both partners will have equal rights in the venture, including the authority to appoint an equal number of directors. The definitive agreements governing the venture include customary affirmative consent rights to ensure operational alignment between the two companies.

Driving Innovation and Global Standards

The collaboration is designed to grant JSW Steel access to POSCO’s world-class steel manufacturing expertise and proprietary technology. By producing high-grade steel products, the venture targets the growing demand in the automotive sector and other specialized industrial applications. The parties expect to complete the transaction and formalize the venture by December 31, 2026, subject to the fulfillment of standard closing conditions and adjustments.

Future Market Outlook

This initiative aligns with JSW Steel’s long-term goal to reach a production capacity of 50 MTPA in India by FY31. By partnering with the world’s most competitive steelmakers, JSW intends to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and solidify its competitive edge in the global steel landscape.
