NHPC Limited Cabinet Approval Secured for 1720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project

NHPC Limited has received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs to develop the 1720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh. The project, involving a total investment of ₹26,069.50 crore, will be executed by a joint venture between NHPC and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. With an estimated construction timeline of 96 months, the plant is expected to generate 6870 MUs of energy annually.

Investment and Project Details

The Government has greenlit a massive investment of ₹26,069.50 crore for the construction of the Kamala Hydro Electric Project. Strategically located across the Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey districts of Arunachal Pradesh, the project is designed to be a significant contributor to regional energy security.

Technical Specifications and Energy Capacity

The facility will feature a robust installed capacity of 1720 MW, utilizing a configuration of 8 units of 210 MW each and 1 unit of 40 MW. Once operational, the project is projected to deliver 6870 MUs of electricity annually. The development is scheduled to reach completion within a timeframe of 96 months.

Strategic Implementation and Funding

The project will be executed through a Joint Venture Company formed between NHPC Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. Financial backing includes significant support from the Union Government, specifically ₹4,743.98 crore for flood moderation and ₹1,340 crore for infrastructure development, such as roads, bridges, and transmission systems. Additionally, the project will receive ₹750 crore in Central Financial Assistance to support the state’s equity share.
