Tata Communications is investing approximately $400-450 million to build a 10,000 km AI-ready connectivity network across India, dubbed the ‘AI Super Highway’. This initiative aims to support the country’s growing AI and data center ecosystem by providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity. The investment will be rolled out in phases, enhancing India’s position as a global digital gateway.
Tata Communications Launches ‘AI Super Highway’ Initiative
Tata Communications has announced a strategic investment of between $400 million and $450 million to construct a new ‘AI Super Highway’ across India. This ambitious project involves building approximately 10,000 kilometers of a high-speed, low-latency network fabric designed to connect the nation’s key AI and data center corridors. The company stated that this infrastructure will be integrated with its existing global network backbone, offering seamless connectivity for next-generation AI workloads.
Strategic Importance and Market Opportunity
The investment is driven by the projected significant growth in India’s data center industry, fueled by accelerating cloud adoption, AI deployment, and increasing data localization requirements. Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD and CEO of Tata Communications, highlighted the opportunity in data center-to-data center connectivity, predicting a market exceeding $1 billion in the medium term. He emphasized that the company is building on its existing strengths to create a comprehensive data center connectivity platform.
Key Highlights of the AI Super Highway Project
The ‘AI Super Highway’ project is characterized by several key features:
- A planned investment of $400-450 million.
- Deployment of approximately 10,000 km of new AI-ready connectivity infrastructure.
- A three-phased expansion targeting India’s high-growth AI corridors.
- Infrastructure designed to support global hyperscalers, AI platforms, neo-cloud providers, and enterprises.
- Integration with Tata Communications’ existing global network backbone.
Phased Rollout and Network Expansion
The initial phase of the project will focus on the crucial Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, identified as one of India’s most important routes for AI and hyperscale growth. Subsequent phases will extend connectivity to emerging ecosystems along the East Coast and in Western India, including locations like Vizag, Bhubaneswar, and Jamnagar. By linking these key hubs with international cable landing stations, Tata Communications aims to establish India as a strategic gateway in the global digital infrastructure landscape.
Existing Network and Future Capacity
In parallel, Tata Communications will continue to scale its existing National Long Distance and metro network to meet current enterprise and data center needs while building capacity for future demand. The company’s extensive network includes over 500,000 km of subsea optical fiber and 200,000+ km of terrestrial fiber. Recent enhancements include plans for a new subsea cable system between Mumbai and Singapore and the integration of the TGN IA2 submarine cable in 2025 to improve latency and redundancy.
Financial Details and Rationale
The investment required for this expansion is estimated at ₹4,350 crores (approximately $400-450 million), with the proposed capacity addition of approximately 6 Pbps expected to be completed between FY 2030 and FY 2036. The financing will be managed through Operating Cash Flows. The rationale behind this investment is to capitalize on the burgeoning AI economy, which requires a network built for speed, scale, and resilience, thereby fueling India’s next chapter of economic growth.
