Grasim Industries has announced the commencement of commercial production at its Birla Opus Paints plant in Kharagpur, West Bengal, effective October 15, 2025. The plant has an installed capacity of 180 MLPA for water-based paints, 20 MLPA for distemper, 30 MLPA for solvent-based paints, and 6 MLPA for colorants. This launch increases the company’s total decorative paints capacity to 1,332 Million Litres Per Annum (MLPA).
Birla Opus Paints Production Starts
Grasim Industries announced that its Birla Opus Paints plant, located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, has begun commercial production as of October 15, 2025. This marks a significant step in expanding the company’s presence in the paints sector.
Installed Capacity Details
The Kharagpur plant has the following installed capacities for various paint products:
- Water-based Paint: 180 MLPA
- Distemper: 20 MLPA
- Solvent-based Paint: 30 MLPA
- Colorants: 6 MLPA
It is noted that the resin manufacturing block is yet to be commissioned, with resin currently being sourced from Birla Opus’s other plants for solvent-based paints.
Overall Impact
With the commencement of this plant, Grasim Industries reports that all six of its green-field decorative paints plants are now commercially operational. The company’s total installed capacity for decorative paints under the “Birla Opus” brand has reached 1,332 Million Litres Per Annum (MLPA). This capacity will cater to the domestic market.
