NALCO Forges Technology Partnership for Smelter Expansion

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has announced a significant technology partnership with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA). This collaboration aims to leverage EGA’s advanced DX+ Ultra aluminium smelting technology for NALCO’s upcoming 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) brownfield smelter expansion project located in Anugola, Odisha. The agreement was signed on September 7, 2026.

Enhancing Production Capacity and Efficiency

The strategic alliance will see EGA provide NALCO with the necessary technology license, comprehensive know-how, designs, and technical information required for the implementation of the DX+ Ultra technology. This state-of-the-art technology is known for its high amperage and efficiency, designed to boost productivity and improve energy performance. By adopting this technology, NALCO expects to develop a highly efficient and competitive smelter with optimized capital and operating costs.

Project Details and Strategic Impact

The proposed expansion at Anugola will add approximately 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to NALCO’s aluminium production capacity. Combined with its existing capacity, this expansion will enable the company to move towards an overall production capacity of about 1 million tonnes per annum. Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh, CMD of NALCO, highlighted that the Anugola smelter expansion project, powered by EGA’s technology, is poised to become one of India’s most efficient aluminium smelters. This initiative is expected to not only support NALCO’s growth but also strengthen India’s aluminium ecosystem and contribute significantly to the nation’s economic growth and vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Milestone for Expansion Programme

This partnership marks a crucial milestone in NALCO’s ongoing expansion programme and its commitment to enhancing technological efficiency, productivity, and sustainability in aluminium production. The expansion at Anugola is projected to further solidify NALCO’s production capabilities and help meet the escalating demand for aluminium in India’s strategic and emerging sectors.
