The DoT had issued a demand notice for ₹8.56 Crore alleging IP-I Registration violations. An Arbitral Tribunal had previously quashed this demand, and the Delhi High Court has now dismissed the DoT’s challenge, upholding the award in STL’s favour with no financial or operational exposure.

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) has announced a favorable outcome in a significant legal matter concerning a demand notice issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). On August 24, 2020, the DoT had levied a demand of ₹8.56 Crore against STL, citing alleged violations of its IP-I Registration terms. The company actively contested this demand.
Arbitral Award Upheld
The dispute was adjudicated by Justice Kailash Gambhir (Retd.), who served as the Sole Arbitrator. In a favorable ruling dated May 17, 2023, the Arbitral Award completely quashed the demand raised by the DoT. Subsequently, the DoT challenged this award by filing a petition under Section 34 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, before the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi. The High Court has now dismissed the DoT’s petition, thereby upholding the Arbitral Award in favour of Sterlite Technologies Limited. This ruling means STL has zero financial or operational exposure related to this specific demand.
