VA TECH WABAG Secures EIB-Funded Advanced Technology WWTP Project in Georgia

VA TECH WABAG (WABAG) has secured a consortium award for a major wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Kutaisi, Georgia, funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project involves constructing a 19 MLD facility with future expansion planned up to 56 MLD. This contract marks WABAG’s strategic entry into the Georgian and CIS markets, enhancing its global footprint as a trusted water technology partner.

Major International Project Secured in Georgia

VA TECH WABAG (‘WABAG’), a multinational water technology group, announced on March 20, 2026, that it has won a ‘Large’ order through a consortium. The contract is with the United Water Supply Company of Georgia LLC (‘UWSCG’) for the construction of an Advanced Technology Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Kutaisi, Georgia’s third-largest city. The project is financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Scope and Value of the Contract

The initial capacity of the new WWTP is set at 19 Million Litres Per Day (MLD), with provisions for future expansion up to 56 MLD. WABAG is serving as the Consortium Leader, responsible for the complete Engineering, Procurement & Construction (‘EPC’) scope. This includes demolition of the existing plant, construction of the new facility, and installation of an effluent pipeline to the River Rioni. The EPC scope is targeted for completion within 36 months.

The scope also encompasses advanced treatment technologies, including mechanical and biological treatment with nutrient removal, final sedimentation, UV disinfection, and specialized sludge treatment facilities with solar drying systems. Furthermore, WABAG will supervise Operation & Maintenance (O&M) for a period of 12 months post-commissioning.

Strategic Significance

This significant win is crucial as it marks WABAG’s official entry into the CIS region and the Georgian market. Mr. Mahmut Gedek, CEO – Europe Cluster, highlighted the pride in securing the contract, which promises lasting environmental, health, and social benefits to the residents of Kutaisi.

Order Classification Details

The order falls under the ‘Large’ classification for International orders, valued between USD 30 – 75 Millions, as per the internal note provided in the disclosure. This project solidifies WABAG’s position in delivering sustainable water management solutions globally.
