Titagarh Rail Systems and ABB India have signed an agreement to deliver propulsion systems for 25kV Metro projects, including technology transfer for Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS). The deal involves a gradual transfer of manufacturing and co-production of Converters and Traction Motors under the Make in India initiative. This partnership supports Titagarh’s commitment to local manufacturing and self-reliance.
ABB Partnership for Propulsion Systems
Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) and ABB India have partnered to develop propulsion systems and technology transfer for 25kV driverless metro projects in India, building upon a previous alliance announced in November 2023.
Agreement Details
ABB India will support the design, manufacture, supply, testing, installation supervision, and commissioning of propulsion systems. The agreement includes the transfer of technology for the Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) for 25 kV AC metro applications, and a gradual transfer of manufacturing and co-production of Converters and Traction Motors for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Titagarh had been awarded a contract to deliver 240 metro coaches (132 cars for Line 5 and 108 cars for Line 6). The scope covers Line 5 (Kapurbawadi-Kalyan APMC, 24.52 km, 17 stations) and Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar-Vikhroli (EEH), 15.60 km, 13 stations), along with 5 years of maintenance.
Manufacturing and Co-production
The agreement includes a gradual transfer of manufacturing and co-production of traction motors, traction converters, and auxiliary converters.
Make in India Initiative
This agreement marks a significant step for Titagarh’s commitment to the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. It complements Titagarh’s earlier acquisition of TCMS technology for 750 V metro systems in 2023. The current agreement enables Titagarh to complete its portfolio for TCMS for both traction systems. Titagarh has also set up its own TCMS laboratory in its design center in Bangalore.
Future Plans
Titagarh will progressively co-produce propulsion systems for metro applications, further developing their comprehensive railway rolling stock production capabilities. This collaboration boosts India’s self-reliance in high-value railway technologies and enables domestic manufacturing for upcoming metro and rail projects.
Executive Commentary
Mr. Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, stated that the agreement marks a big step towards making India Atmanirbhar and that Titagarh is committed to enhancing its capabilities towards that effect.
