Tata Steel has received an extension of interim protection from the Hon’ble High Court of Orissa in connection with ongoing litigation pertaining to its Sukinda Chromite Block. The legal matters concern demands raised by the Office of Deputy Director of Mines, Jajpur.
Details of Writ Petitions
The matters under consideration involve two writ petitions:
Writ Petition 1 (Civil) No. 22431 of 2025: Concerns a demand of ₹1902,72,53,760/- related to the revised assessment of shortfall in mineral dispatch for the 4th year. Tata Steel filed this petition seeking quashing of the demand letter. The Hon’ble High Court initially granted interim protection on August 14, 2025.
Writ Petition 2 (Civil) No. 31035 of 2025: Pertains to a demand of ₹2410,89,66,881/- regarding the assessment of shortfall in chrome ore dispatch for the 5th year. Tata Steel similarly filed a petition seeking to quash this demand letter. Interim protection was granted initially on November 21, 2025.
Court’s Decision
On January 29, 2026, the Hon’ble High Court heard both writ petitions and decided to extend the interim protection previously granted in both matters. The next hearing is scheduled for February 2, 2026.
