Tata Steel provides an update on litigations related to the Sukinda Chromite Block. The Hon’ble High Court has extended the interim protection granted in connection with two writ petitions concerning demand letters for alleged shortfalls in mineral dispatch. The next hearing for both matters is scheduled for January 29, 2026.
Sukinda Chromite Block Litigations
Tata Steel has announced an update on the ongoing litigations pertaining to the Sukinda Chromite Block. These litigations involve disputes over demand letters issued by the Office of Deputy Director of Mines, Jajpur, relating to alleged shortfalls in the dispatch of minerals.
Writ Petition 1: Demand Letter 1
The first writ petition concerns Demand Letter 1, which raised a demand of ₹1902,72,53,760. This demand was connected to a revised assessment of a shortfall in mineral dispatch from the Sukinda Chromite Block for the 4th year, according to the Mine Development and Production Agreement (from July 23, 2023, through July 22, 2024). The Company filed a writ petition seeking to quash Demand Letter 1.
Writ Petition 2: Demand Letter 2
The second writ petition relates to Demand Letter 2, which demanded ₹2410,89,66,881. This demand was associated with the assessment of a shortfall in the dispatch of Chrome Ore from the Sukinda Chromite Block for the 5th year, according to the Mine Development and Production Agreement (from July 23, 2024 through July 22, 2025). The Company also filed a writ petition seeking to quash Demand Letter 2.
Current Status: Interim Protection Extended
Both Writ Petition 1 and Writ Petition 2 were heard by the Hon’ble High Court. The Company informs that the Hon’ble High Court has further extended the interim protection for both matters until the next hearing scheduled for January 29, 2026.
