Tata Power Commissions Transmission Line, Boosting North India Grid

Tata Power has commissioned the 400 kV Koteshwar-Rishikesh transmission line, strengthening North India’s power grid. This critical infrastructure will facilitate the evacuation of 1,000 MW of clean hydropower from the Tehri-Koteshwar generation complex, benefiting six northern states and three Union Territories. The project was executed by NRSS XXXVI Transmission Limited, highlighting Tata Power’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Transmission Line Commissioned

Tata Power has announced the successful commissioning of the 400 kV Koteshwar-Rishikesh transmission line, a key infrastructure project for India’s northern power corridor. The commissioning, announced on December 9, 2025, marks a significant enhancement to the region’s power distribution capabilities.

Project Details and Benefits

This transmission line will enable the evacuation of 1,000 MW of hydropower from the Tehri-Koteshwar generation complex in Uttarakhand to several northern states and Union Territories. The project was executed under NRSS XXXVI Transmission Limited (NRSS).

The new line will channel renewable energy to Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Delhi, significantly enhancing regional energy security and grid reliability. The transmission line climbs to altitudes exceeding 1,816 meters. More than 500 personnel completed the project’s physical work within a single year (November 2024 to December 2025), following land clearance for 103 hectares.

Strengthening Transmission Infrastructure

The current commissioning represents the third major milestone under the NRSS project. Earlier elements include the 400 kV LILO Sikar-Neemrana Double Circuit line (3.1 circuit km) and the 400 kV LILO Babai-Bhiwani Double Circuit line (222 circuit km). With this addition, Tata Power now has 7,083 cKm of transmission lines operational or under execution across India.
