Nagan Thangal Lake Transformed

Tata Communications, in collaboration with Pitchandikulam Forest, has successfully revived the Nagan Thangal Lake in Upparapalayam village, Tamil Nadu. This transformation has created a thriving ecological and community asset, as announced on October 23, 2025.

Positive Impact and Assessment

The initiative has led to substantial improvements in water security, biodiversity, and community engagement. A recent assessment by the W-CReS confirmed these improvements, highlighting what a well-planned restoration can achieve when aligned with local needs. The project now benefits nearly 12,000 individuals, with 60% from marginalized communities.

Project Details: ‘Project Nanneer’

The restoration project, named ‘Project Nanneer,’ was initiated in 2022 to revive the lake, which had previously deteriorated due to neglect, siltation, and pollution. The project involved careful excavation, desilting, and land shaping to revitalize the lake’s ecosystem. Over 4,000 plants of native species were planted.

Key Outcomes of the Revival

The W-CReS report highlights several key improvements:

  • Water storage increased from 2.6 million litres to 8.5 million litres.
  • Groundwater recharge increased 3X to 8.5 million litres.
  • Water spread area increased significantly.
  • Barren land decreased by 15%.
  • Built-up area increased by 86%.
  • Recorded 14 fish species, 56 bird species, and 33 butterfly species.

Community Engagement and Education

The rejuvenated lake now attracts over 11,500 annual visitors and offers learning opportunities for students. Nearly 650 students from 11 schools have participated in educational visits, and approximately 1,100 people have taken part in eco festivals.
