Sterlite Technologies Colt Trials Multi-Core Fibre in London Metro Network

Sterlite Technologies (STL) collaborated with Colt Technology Services for Multi-Core Fibre (MCF) trials across Colt’s London metro optical network. The trials mark a milestone in validating MCF technology as a sustainable, high-capacity backbone for next-generation networks supporting AI, cloud, and digital services. The project achieved 800 Gbps line rate with successful validation for 100GE and 400GE services.

Multi-Core Fibre Trial Success

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) announced a successful collaboration with Colt Technology Services (Colt) for Multi-Core Fibre (MCF) trials executed across Colt’s London metro optical network. This initiative validates MCF technology as a sustainable, high-capacity backbone for networks supporting AI, cloud, and digital services.

Trial Details and Results

The trial utilized STL’s Multiverse™ Multi-Core 4-core Fibre, built in the same cladding diameter as standard single-mode fibre (SMF). Conducted within the London Metro network between two Colt Points of Presence (PoPs) over distances of approximately 9 km and 63 km, the trial achieved an 800 Gbps line rate. Validation was performed for both 100GE and 400GE services.

Testing and Performance

Comprehensive testing included Chromatic Dispersion (CD), Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD), Crosstalk, Throughput, Fault analysis, OTDR, Loss, and Optical Return Loss (ORL) measurements. STL’s MCF packs 4-cores into the same cladding diameter as standard single-mode fibre, keeping coating size at 250/200 micrometres, achieving high transmission capacity.

Industry Impact

According to Buddy Bayer, Chief Operating Officer at Colt Technology Services, this pilot marks a breakthrough across Europe and the USA, demonstrating a commitment to delivering future-ready, sustainable networks. Dr. Badri Gomatam, CTO of STL, added that the Multiverse MCF portfolio is engineered to meet the high-density, ultra-low latency, and resilient connectivity demands of AI, hyperscale cloud, and next-generation digital ecosystems worldwide.
