Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) announces the end of Force Majeure for its Area 1 Mozambique LNG Project. Declared in May 2021 due to security concerns, the project can now resume construction. ONGC holds a 16% interest in the Area 1 concession, operated by TotalEnergies SE which has a 26.5% Participating Interest (PI). The project aims for early completion following improvements in security.
Force Majeure Lifted
The Force Majeure declared for the Area 1 Mozambique LNG Project has been withdrawn, effective November 12, 2025. This declaration, initially issued in May 2021, had suspended construction activities which began in 2019.
Project Details and Stakeholders
ONGC Videsh Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), holds a 16% interest in the Area 1 concession. Total E&P Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, a WoS of TotalEnergies SE, operates the Mozambique LNG project with a 26.5% Participating Interest (PI). Other partners include ENH Rovuma Area Um, S.A. (15%), Mitsui Rovuma Offshore Area1 Limited (20%), OVRL (10%), BREML (10%), BPRL Ventures Mozambique B.V. (10%), and PTTEP Mozambique Area 1 Limited (8.5%).
Impact and Future Outlook
The withdrawal of the Force Majeure enables the resumption of construction activities on the 13.12 MMTPA LNG project, aimed at the early completion of the project. The security situation in Cabo Delgado Province (CDP) has significantly improved, which led to the consortium notifying the Government of Mozambique about the end of the Force Majeure on May 11, 2021.
