NLC India Limited announced the successful commencement of coal production from its Pachwara South Open Cast Project in Jharkhand on March 29, 2026. This coal is designated to fuel the 3 x 660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant, which is being established by NUPPL, a joint venture between NLCIL and U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited. The coal block holds extractable reserves of 264.84 million tonnes.
Key Milestone Achieved in Fuel Security
NLC India Limited has reported a significant operational achievement related to its subsidiary power project. Coal production has officially begun at the Pachwara South Open Cast Project located in Dumka District, Jharkhand, effective March 29, 2026. This development follows the successful commencement of overburden removal which began on December 19, 2025.
Ghatampur Power Plant Fuel Linkage
The extracted coal from this mine will serve as the primary fuel source for the 3 x 660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant. This plant is being developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture where NLC India Limited holds a 51% equity stake, with U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited holding the remaining 49%.
Coal Block Details
The Pachwara South Coal Block was initially allotted to the Company via an order dated October 3, 2016. Following comprehensive exploration, the block has proven extractable coal reserves amounting to 264.84 million tonnes. The planned normative mining capacity for this operation is 9 million tonnes per annum, with the coal classified at an average grade of G10.
This successful operationalization of the coal block ensures a secure fuel supply chain for the crucial upcoming power generation facility.
