JSW Energy Secures Turbine Supply for 1,600 MW Salboni Plant

JSW Energy’s subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy, has contracted with Toshiba JSW Power Systems for two steam turbine generators, each of 800 MW, for its 1,600 MW Salboni Thermal Project in West Bengal. This move ensures supply-chain certainty, timely completion, and reduces industry-wide equipment shortage risks. The company aims to have 30 GW generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by FY2030.

Salboni Plant Expansion

JSW Thermal Energy Limited, a subsidiary of JSW Energy, has secured a crucial agreement with Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Ltd for the supply of steam turbine generators. These generators are designated for the 1,600 MW Salboni Thermal Project located in West Bengal.

Strategic Supply Agreement

The turbine-generator package will be manufactured and supplied in alignment with the project’s construction timeline. This strategy aims to facilitate timely project completion and commissioning. By sourcing key equipment through an associate company, JSW Energy intends to strengthen supply chain reliability and mitigate risks related to equipment shortages.

Capacity and Future Goals

JSW Energy currently has 5,658 MW of thermal generation capacity. With the 1,600 MW Salboni project under construction and the potential addition of 1,800 MW at KSK Mahanadi, the company’s total thermal capacity is expected to reach 9,058 MW. This would represent approximately 30% of the company’s total locked-in capacity of 30.5 GW.

JSW Energy aims for 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by FY2030, striving for Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

Leadership Perspective

According to Mr. Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, the turbine generator supply contract is a strategic move to strengthen supply-chain control and ensure execution certainty for the Salboni Thermal Project. He highlighted the long-standing association with Toshiba, emphasizing shared values of excellence, innovation, and commitment to long-term value creation.

Commitment to Energy Security

The Salboni Power Project signifies JSW Energy’s dedication to supporting India’s energy security by providing reliable baseload capacity that complements the country’s expanding renewable footprint. Thermal power is expected to play a vital role in grid stability as India progresses towards its long-term energy transition goals. The company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity through hydro pumped storage projects of 26.4 GWh and battery energy storage system of 3.0 GWh.
