InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) Introduction of Fuel Charge Effective March 14, 2026

IndiGo announced the immediate introduction of a ‘Fuel Charge’ on all domestic and international bookings, effective March 14, 2026, at 00:01 hrs. This decision is a direct response to an 85+% surge in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices in the Middle East, driven by geopolitical factors. The airline emphasized this is a smaller adjustment to partially offset the significant rise in operating costs, aiming to balance the burden on customers while maintaining affordable fares.

Introduction of New Fuel Charge

IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has implemented a new ‘Fuel Charge’ across its domestic and international routes, effective March 14, 2026, at 00:01 hrs. This measure comes after a sharp and sustained increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) costs.

The necessity for this surcharge stems from global geopolitical issues, leading to an 85+% increase in fuel prices in the Middle East region, as noted by IATA’s Jet Fuel Monitor. Since ATF constitutes a significant portion of operating expenses, this steep increase necessitated an adjustment to fares.

Fuel Charge Structure per Sector

While the airline stated that offsetting the entire impact of the fuel surge would require substantial fare hikes, the introduced Fuel Charge is a relatively smaller amount per sector. The charges, applicable to all new bookings from the effective date, are detailed as follows:

  • Within Domestic India: ₹ 425
  • Indian Subcontinent: ₹ 425
  • Middle East: ₹ 900
  • South East Asia and China: ₹ 1800
  • Africa and West Asia: ₹ 1800
  • Europe: ₹ 2300

Commitment to Customers

IndiGo expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by this additional charge, reiterating that the action was driven by a sudden and substantial change in the operating environment. The airline remains committed to its core philosophy of offering affordable, convenient, and on-time travel.

For context, IndiGo noted it operates 2200+ daily flights, connects 95+ domestic and 40+ international destinations, and welcomed 124 million customers in CY25.
