Positioned as an ‘ICE Breaker,’ this new EV is designed to directly challenge high-selling petrol scooters in the sub-₹1 lakh segment by offering superior performance, better economics, and advanced software integration for the mass market.
Greaves Electric Mobility Unveils New EV Scooter Strategy
On 19th February, 2026, Greaves Cotton Limited announced that its material subsidiary, Greaves Electric Mobility Limited (GEML), is launching the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter. This launch is strategically aimed at disrupting India’s large petrol scooter market, positioning the new model as an ‘ICE Breaker’ for the electric two-wheeler segment.
Targeting the High-Volume Segment
The Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter is engineered for release in FY27, targeting the high-volume market segment priced below ₹1 lakh. Mr. Vikas Singh, MD & CFO of GEML, stated that this segment remains largely ICE-led, and the new product aims to compete directly with the largest selling petrol offerings by enhancing green mobility and improving software integration.
Key Performance Differentiators
To bridge the gap between conventional EVs and petrol scooters, the Ampere 6th Gen is engineered to offer significant advantages over competitors in the entry-level category:
- Higher Torque: Delivers greater torque than the largest selling ICE scooters, leading to quicker pickup and stronger load-carrying capability.
- Improved Gradeability: Designed for stronger hill-climb performance compared to conventional value EVs and typical ICE scooters in the sub-₹1 lakh bracket.
- Cost and Convenience Advantage: Aims to reduce total ownership running costs by 50% compared to ICE scooters, offering benefits like home charging, reverse mode, and reduced maintenance.
- Value-add-ons: It is designed as a software-defined vehicle, featuring Over-The-Air (OTA) update capability and AI/ML enabled support for seamless connectivity and remote diagnostics.
GEML’s Market Presence and Vision
GEML, which has over 17 years of experience in designing and manufacturing electric vehicles, currently has over 3L+ vehicles on the road supported by more than 400 service touch points nationwide. The launch of the 6th Gen Scooter is a key step in GEML’s mission to democratize smart and sustainable mobility, making electric scooters accessible and competitive for Indian families.
