Global Health Limited (GHL) announced key strategic expansions following its Board meeting on March 25, 2026. GHL approved the development of a 400+ bed multi-specialty hospital in Varanasi via a build-to-suit lease agreement, requiring an estimated investment of up to Rs. 550 crores. Additionally, the Board revised plans to establish a Medical College, opting to proceed directly through GHL instead of its Section 8 subsidiary.
Strategic Expansion in Uttar Pradesh
Global Health Limited (GHL), operating under the Medanta brand, has approved significant capacity expansion and diversification into medical education. The Board’s decisions, announced on March 25, 2026, solidify Medanta’s commitment to enhancing its footprint, particularly in Northern and Eastern India.
New 400-Bed Varanasi Hospital
The Board approved executing definitive agreements for a Build-to-Suit and lease arrangement with Shripal Hospitality LLP & Others to establish a new hospital facility in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Key details of this project include:
- Capacity: Approx. 400+ beds, catering to a population base of over 4 million in Varanasi and adjoining regions.
- Investment: Total estimated investment by the Company (GHL) is up to Rs. 550 crores, covering interior services, fit-outs, and medical equipment. The civil structure will be developed by the partner.
- Timeline: Construction is expected to be completed within 4 years, subject to approvals.
- Financing: Funded by a combination of internal accruals and debt financing.
- Rationale: This project expands services into the densely populated Varanasi area and strengthens Medanta’s presence in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, complementing existing facilities in Lucknow and Noida.
Medical College Establishment Change
GHL has also altered its strategy regarding the establishment of a Medical College. Previously, this was slated to be managed by its Wholly-owned Subsidiary, Global Health Institute of Medical Sciences Foundation, a Section 8 (Non-Profit) Company incorporated on March 30, 2024.
Following revised regulations from the National Medical Commission (NMC) that removed the restriction limiting medical college establishment solely to Section 8 Companies, the Board approved that the application for establishing the medical college will now be made directly through the Company, Global Health Limited (GHL).
- Project Cost (Medical College): A total project cost of Rs. 322 Crores is approved.
- Funding (Medical College): To be funded through internal accruals or debts.
- Expected Benefits: Building a strong pipeline of skilled medical professionals and enhancing regional healthcare infrastructure.
Existing Capacity Context
As of December 31, 2025, Medanta maintains an existing capacity of 3,579 beds across its operating hospitals in Gurugram, Indore, Ranchi, Lucknow, Patna, and Noida. The Varanasi addition will significantly augment this operational scale in the State.
Management Commentary
Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director, stated the expansion reflects Medanta’s commitment to enhancing access to advanced healthcare in densely populated regions. Mr. Pankaj Sahni, Group CEO, highlighted that upon completion of the Varanasi facility, Medanta’s network in Uttar Pradesh will provide approximately 1,900 beds, positioning it among the largest private hospital networks in the state.
