New Inland Container Depot
Gateway Distriparks Limited (GDL) is set to expand its operations with the acquisition of approximately 25 acres of land near Pithampur Industrial Area in Indore. The company plans to develop and operate a new Inland Container Depot (ICD) on this land.
Project Details and Investment
The proposed ICD has already received In-Principle Approval from Indian Railways. It will feature two rail sidings and is designed to handle around 120,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually. The total investment for the project is estimated at ₹150 crores.
Service Offerings
Upon completion, the facility will offer integrated services, including rail transportation for EXIM and domestic containers, container handling, bonded warehousing, and last-mile road distribution.
Strategic Expansion
This project marks GDL’s entry into Central India and Madhya Pradesh, extending its footprint into a fast-growing industrial and manufacturing region. The ICD is expected to serve a wide regional catchment, including Indore, Pithampur, Dewas, Dhar, Mhow, Ujjain, and Sanwer, and surrounding industrial clusters. It will handle diverse cargo, including auto components, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, polymers, textiles, garments, agricultural products, and other commodities.
Leadership Perspective
Prem Kishan Dass Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, stated that the Indore ICD will strengthen the company’s domestic container logistics and rail-based distribution network. This will enable manufacturers and shippers in the region to access cost-efficient containerised movement to ports and across India’s key consumption and industrial corridors.
Anticipated Benefits
The ICD is expected to benefit from the upcoming Indore-Dahod rail line, which will reduce rail lead distance from Indore to JNPT and accelerate the shift of container movement from road to rail.
