GAIL Signs Long-Term LNG Carrier Charter Agreement with MOL

GAIL (India) Limited and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) have entered a long-term charter agreement for an LNG carrier named “GAIL BHUWAN”. The signing took place on January 27, 2026, during India Energy Week 2026 in Goa. This agreement reinforces cooperation in LNG shipping and energy logistics, contributing to a low- and decarbonized society and bolstering India’s energy security.

GAIL and MOL Partner on LNG Transport

GAIL (India) Limited and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd (MOL) have formalized a long-term charter agreement for the LNG carrier “GAIL BHUWAN”. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in LNG shipping and energy logistics. The official signing ceremony occurred on January 27, 2026, in Goa during India Energy Week 2026.

Strategic Implications of the Agreement

This agreement, signed between GAIL (India) Limited and LNG Japonica Shipping Corporation Limited (a Joint Venture where GAIL holds 26% and MOL holds 74%), marks an important milestone under the ‘Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047’. This initiative reinforces India’s maritime and energy supply chain capabilities. Both GAIL and MOL have committed to ambitious net-zero emission targets, with this agreement facilitating a low- and decarbonized society.

GAIL (India) Limited operates a network of over 18001 km of natural gas pipelines. In the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) segment, GAIL has a large and diversified portfolio aimed at ensuring long-term supply security. GAIL is a top global LNG portfolio marketer and has built the largest LNG fleet in India, strengthening the country’s maritime capabilities.

MOL’s Regional Strategy

MOL considers regional strategy a key pillar in its group management plan “BLUE ACTION 2035”, identifying Asia as a region with strong economic growth potential. MOL actively expands its business presence in India and will continue to support growing energy demand, including natural gas, through this partnership with GAIL.
