Balrampur Chini Mills Limited Secures First Institutional Order for PLA Products from Lucknow Cantonment Board

Balrampur Chini Mills Limited’s (BCML) PLA vertical, Balrampur Bioyug, has secured its inaugural institutional order from the Lucknow Cantonment Board (LCB). The order includes various compostable items such as garbage bags, 300 ml bottles, and PLA pens, manufactured from 100% compostable, bio-based Polylactic Acid (PLA). This milestone reflects growing institutional trust in India’s emerging bio-based materials ahead of BCML’s domestic PLA plant commissioning in October 2026.

First Major Institutional Order for Bio-Materials

Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) announced that its PLA manufacturing vertical, Balrampur Bioyug, has achieved a significant milestone by securing its first official institutional order from the Lucknow Cantonment Board (LCB). This procurement is critical for India’s emerging bio-based materials ecosystem.

Scope of the Compostable Supply

The order encompasses a range of sustainable products manufactured from renewable, bio-based Polylactic Acid (PLA), a 100% compostable material that leaves no microplastics. The specific items ordered by LCB include: compostable garbage bags (two sizes), 300 ml PLA bottles, 3D-printed PLA compostable pens, and PLA folders.

Commitment to Sustainability and Infrastructure Confidence

The Lucknow Cantonment Board, which functions under the Ministry of Defence, is reinforcing its commitment to structured, sustainable governance by integrating compostable PLA solutions into its operations. This decision signals institutional confidence in indigenous bio-based innovation, especially since it precedes the commissioning of BCML’s India’s first domestic industrial-scale PLA manufacturing unit at Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, slated for October 2026. This facility will have a capacity of 80,000 TPA.

Joint Initiative Planned

To further mark the commitment, Bioyug and the LCB will jointly host a ceremonial event on June 5 (World Environment Day) to formalize the large-scale adoption of PLA-based bioplastics in routine institutional use within the Cantonment area.

Executive Commentary

Shri Abhishek Rathour, CEO of LCB, stated that the adoption of PLA items reflects a commitment to embedding sustainability into everyday governance, aligning defence establishments with India’s long-term climate goals. Ms. Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of BCML, emphasized that the order confirms that sustainable materials are now credible, performance-oriented solutions for large-scale institutional deployment, marking a shift from fossil-based materials.
